What is fitness age?
Your fitness age is the age at which the average person's cardiovascular fitness matches yours. It is built from VO2 max — the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during hard exercise, and the single best measure of aerobic fitness. Because VO2 max declines predictably with age, a given value maps neatly onto an age: if your fitness is better than typical for your years, your fitness age comes out younger than your real age, and if it is worse, older.
The appeal of fitness age is that, unlike the number on your birthday cake, it can move. A 45-year-old who trains consistently can carry the cardio fitness of a typical 38-year-old — a fitness age of 38. Large cohort studies have linked higher cardiorespiratory fitness (and a younger fitness age) to lower risk of cardiovascular disease and death, which is why the idea has moved from research labs into everyday wearables.
How this calculator works
The tool runs in two steps, mirroring the same model Health Genie uses inside the app.
Step 1 — find your VO2 max
If you enter a VO2 max directly — for example your Apple Watch Cardio Fitness number — the calculator uses it as-is, which gives the most accurate result. If you don't have that number, it estimates VO2 max from your age, sex, body-mass index, and daily step count using the Jackson non-exercise equation (Jackson et al., 1990), a validated regression that predicts VO2 max without any exercise test. Your step count is mapped conservatively onto a physical-activity rating, capped at a moderate level, because step volume alone can't evidence vigorous structured training.
Step 2 — convert VO2 max to an age
Your VO2 max is then compared against population median VO2 max values by age from the FRIEND registry (Kaminsky et al., 2015), the reference standard built from cardiopulmonary exercise tests on thousands of healthy Americans. The calculator finds the age whose median VO2 max equals yours — that is your fitness age. The result is clamped to a sensible 18–85 range so sparse inputs can't produce extreme values.

Reading the table: a 50-year-old man with a VO2 max of 42 has the median fitness of a man in his early 30s, so his fitness age lands around 32 — roughly 18 years younger than his real age. A woman of 40 with a VO2 max of 23 sits near the median for a woman in her mid-50s.
How to find your VO2 max on Apple Watch
Apple Watch estimates VO2 max automatically and stores it as Cardio Fitness. To read it: open the Health app on your iPhone, tap Browse, search for Cardio Fitness, and open the entry. The most recent value is your VO2 max in ml/kg/min — enter it in the field above for the sharpest fitness age. Apple Watch builds this estimate from your heart rate during outdoor walks, runs, and hikes, so it becomes more reliable the more outdoor cardio you record.
How to lower your fitness age
Fitness age drops as VO2 max rises, and VO2 max responds well to training for almost everyone:
- Build an aerobic base. Easy, conversational "Zone 2" cardio for 30–60 minutes, several times a week, is the foundation that lets your ceiling rise.
- Add intervals. One or two weekly sessions of hard efforts near your maximum, alternated with recovery, are the most direct stimulus for lifting VO2 max.
- Walk more. A higher daily step count raises the activity input in the estimate and reflects a genuinely more active life — the easiest lever for most people to pull.
Re-check every few weeks. Because fitness age is anchored to real physiology, watching it tick down is a concrete, motivating sign that your training is working.

What is fitness age?

What is a good fitness age?
A good result is a fitness age equal to or below your real age. A fitness age several years lower means your cardio fitness beats the median for your years, which large studies link to lower heart-disease risk and longer life. A fitness age above your real age is a prompt to add more aerobic activity, not a diagnosis.
Is fitness age the same as heart age?
They are related but not identical. This tool's fitness age is built from cardio fitness (VO2 max) versus population norms. Some clinics use "heart age" to mean a cardiovascular risk score from blood pressure, cholesterol, and smoking. Both express health as an age, but this calculator is a fitness-based estimate for general wellness, not a clinical risk assessment.
